Ethereum units explained: ETH, gwei and wei
| Unit | Value in ETH | Also known as |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ETH | 1 ETH | Ether — the full coin |
| 1 finney | 0.001 ETH | Milliether (mETH) |
| 1 szabo | 0.000001 ETH | Microether (μETH) |
| 1 gwei | 0.000000001 ETH | Gigawei — the unit gas fees are quoted in |
| 1 wei | 0.000000000000000001 ETH | The smallest unit; 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 wei = 1 ETH |
Small units matter because you don’t need to buy a whole Ether. Most purchases are fractions of a coin — enter any dollar amount in the calculator above to see exactly how much ETH it buys today. Gwei is the unit you’ll meet most often outside the calculator, because Ethereum network fees are quoted in it — look up gas and ETH in the Coinmama glossary.
How is Ethereum’s price determined?
Ethereum’s price isn’t set by any company, government, or central bank — including Coinmama. It is determined purely by supply and demand across hundreds of exchanges around the world, where buyers and sellers agree on a price every second of every day. The figure you see in the calculator above is a market reference rate drawn from live trading data.
Supply works differently on Ethereum. There is no fixed cap on the number of coins: new Ether is issued to the validators who secure the network under proof of stake, while a share of every transaction fee is permanently burned — issuance and burn together decide whether the supply grows or shrinks. Demand comes from everything built on the network: DeFi, stablecoins, NFTs and layer-2 rollups all need ETH to pay for gas. When that demand rises faster than supply the price climbs; when it falls, the price drops — which is why Ether is more volatile than traditional currencies. Want to go deeper? Calculator rate vs. checkout rate
The rates shown by the Ethereum calculator are market reference rates and do not include Coinmama’s commission fee. When you buy on Coinmama, your final quote — including all fees — is always shown clearly before you confirm, so you’ll never be surprised at checkout.
Coinmama’s crypto packages reflect the value of coins at the current market rate, minus Coinmama’s commission fee. Additional bank transaction fees may apply.
