Bitcoin vs Ethereum — how they differ

Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are the two largest cryptocurrencies, but they were designed for different purposes. Bitcoin is digital money. Ethereum is a programmable computer that runs on a global network. Both have their place — the question isn’t “which is better?” but “which suits what you’re trying to do?”

In one line: Bitcoin is digital gold. Ethereum is digital infrastructure.

Where they came from

Bitcoin launched in January 2009. Goal: peer-to-peer electronic cash. Created by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto.

Ethereum launched in July 2015. Goal: a programmable blockchain that runs smart contracts — self-executing code that lives on the network. Created by Vitalik Buterin and a team of co-founders.

When to use which

Bitcoin is most useful as a long-term store of value. It’s the most established, most secured, and most widely held cryptocurrency.

Ethereum is most useful when you want to interact with the broader crypto ecosystem — DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, on-chain games, and so on. It’s also useful as an asset on its own merits.

Many people hold both. They aren’t mutually exclusive.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy BTC or ETH?

It’s a personal call — we don’t give investment advice. Many people hold both: BTC for long-term store of value, ETH for exposure to the smart-contract ecosystem.

Is Ethereum better than Bitcoin?

They were designed for different things. Asking which is “better” is like asking whether email is better than a savings account.

Why is ETH’s supply not capped?

Ethereum’s issuance is dynamic; recent upgrades reduced it significantly. ETH can even be net-deflationary in periods of high network usage.

Are transaction fees lower on Ethereum?

Sometimes — but Ethereum fees vary much more than Bitcoin fees. Layer 2 networks have made ETH transactions cheap most of the time.

Can I buy both on Coinmama?

Yes. Buy Bitcoin or buy Ethereum.
